Your Guide to Tipping Movers In the U.S.

In the U.S., it’s estimated that an individual will move 11.7 times in their lifetime. Whether you move a lot or you are facing your first move, there are lots of details to take care of. One of the questions heard most about moving is whether you’re supposed to tip your movers or not. We asked the moving experts at Cowboy Moving & Storage for information about tipping and are passing this information on to you.

If you’ve had a good moving experience, it’s appropriate to show your appreciation with a tip—especially since they’ve handled all of your fragile belongings and your heavy furniture! While tipping during a move is not required, most like to reward their moving team if they’ve made the moving process less stressful.

It’s up to you to determine the amount you want to tip your movers. Some choose to tip a flat rate, while others prefer to tip a percentage of the moving cost. As a general rule, it’s appropriate to tip $4-$5 per hour per mover, or between 5-10% of the total cost of moving.

Here are some factors to consider when you are deciding how much to tip

• Were you organized when your movers arrived? If you were packing yourself, did you label all the boxes clearly and organize them by room,? If not, you should tip your movers more.

• What was the weather like during your move? Did the movers have to deal with sweltering heat, rain or snow? When movers do a great job moving and protecting your belongings, they deserve a generous tip.

• Did they have to move items up and down stairs? If they are making multiple trips on stairs, they definitely deserve a tip.

• Did they have to move a lot of oversized items? You should consider that when deciding how much to tip.
