What You Should Know About Moving With Pets

Moving is considered one of the Top 5 Most Stressful Experiences in most people’s lives. But guess what? Moving is also stressful for the pets in your life. Whether you have a dog, cat, lizard, snake, bird or turtle, you can make the move easier on your pet with these tips from the moving experts at Cowboy Moving & Storage in Denver.

Before you move, talk to your pet’s veterinarian to learn how you can transfer their medical records to a new vet close to your new home. Most veterinarian offices will not transfer them for you. You’ll have to pick them up to give to your new vet. Be sure to schedule one last check up, even if they are in good health. Get any prescriptions you may need so you won’t have to deal with refills while you are unpacking at your new home!

If you have an exotic or aggressive pet, be sure to check out the local mandates of your new location to make sure owning your pet there is within your legal rights. You should also get any required licenses for your pet from your new community.

On the Day Of Your Move

It’s best to have your pet stay with a friend or family member on moving day so they aren’t in the midst of the chaos of moving. Be sure to take their leash, food, water bowl, medicine, toys, pens and waste clean-up items so they have everything they need. If you can’t have a family member or friend watch them, put them in a room with the door closed and check on them frequently. Strangers in the home and lots of new noises can stress out your pet. Also, take them for a walk occasionally so they get a break from the commotion.

When you are ready to transport them to your new home, or to wherever you are staying that night, make sure you are calm when you approach them. This will help them remain calm. When you arrive at your new home, give them plenty of time to explore their new home and yard before you unpack everything. This can help them begin to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. They may take some time to adjust, but with patience and love—and their familiar belongings in your new home— they’ll start to feel at home soon.
