Make These Home Improvements Before You Move Into Your New Home

When you’re getting ready to move into a new apartment, home, condo, townhome, retirement home or patio home, the last thing you want to do is add more things on your to-do list. However, there are some home improvements you might consider doing before you load up the moving van and head to your new home. These improvements could help you save time, money and hassle if you do them before you move in, instead of after. The moving experts at Cowboy Moving & Storage have put together this list of improvements to consider making before you move.

1.   Change The Locks. You have no idea who has access to keys to your new place. For safety’s sake, you should have the locks changed to your home, garage and any other structures on your property.

2.   Get Rid Of Popcorn Ceilings. This unsightly older trend in homes makes a home look dated. Plus, if your home was built before the 1980s, the ceiling could contain asbestos. Have a professional test on your popcorn ceilings before you start the removal process.

3.   Paint The Interior. It’s much harder to paint the interior of your home once you’ve moved furniture in. If you don’t care for the color of your interior or the finish of your paint, have it done before you move. A fresh coat of paint makes a huge difference.

4.   Update Your Closets. Before you move in to your new home, add storage options in your closets, like extra shelves, drawers, shoe trees and clothing rods to provide more space and easier organization.

5.   It’s A Good Time For Electrical Upgrades. Again, it’s easier to do electrical upgrades in an empty room instead of one filled with your belongings. If you’re moving into a home that’s more than 30 years old, you’ll want to install extra outlets and upgrade the existing ones. Older homes don’t have the capacity to handle the number of powerful devices and electronics that we use today. You might consider upgrading your thermostats and light fixtures as well.

6.   Call Pest Control. Just because you can’t see mice, bugs or other pests in your home doesn’t mean they aren’t there. By bringing in a professional pest control company, you can make sure your home doesn’t have a pest problem and prevent ants, cockroaches and other insects from invading your home in the future.

7.   Get Your Home Deep Cleaned. When people are moving out of a home, they are much more interested in getting ready for their new home rather than cleaning up for the new owners. Hire a professional cleaning company to come do a deep clean before you move in, so you have a clean, fresh start.
